Since 2014, we’ve held government and industry accountable for energy decisions that affect communities. We’ve challenged the energy sector, pushed for transparent policy-making and government commitments to accountability. From parliamentary interactions to legal action and community engagement sessions, this timeline shows the sustained advocacy work we’ve undertaken to ensure South Africa’s energy transition is just, inclusive, and people-centred.

2014
2021
  • Request letter for Public Hearings on Risk Mitigation Independent Power Programme (April 2021). Submitted to prompt parliamentary scrutiny of the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP) process.
  • Letter To Parliament (June 2021) – Karpowership called for urgent public hearings on the RMIPPPP and the awarding of preferred bidder status to Karpowership; urged the establishment of an ad hoc parliamentary oversight committee.
  • Gas Amendment Bill submission (July 2021) provided input on proposed legislative changes relating to gas regulation.
  • Oceans Tribunal Verdict Statement (September 2021) submitted to the Presidential Climate Commission (PCC).
2022
  • Gas Master Plan Base Case Report (March 2022) comments, offered ecojustice perspectives on the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) national gas strategy.
  • Just Transition Framework comments (March 2022) on recommendations to ensure a bottom up, inclusive and rights-based approach to transition planning.
  • Open letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa (August 2022), urged a halt to offshore oil and gas exploration in favour of a climate just energy pathway.
2023
  • Initiated legal proceedings with SAFCEI requesting accountability from President Cyril Ramaphosa and Minister Gwede Mantashe for failing to publish mandatory Integrated Energy Plan (IEP) (January 2023). The case aimed to compel the government to implement Section 6 of the National Energy Act (2008), a provision that requires the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy to develop and publish an IEP annually, in a participatory and transparent manner.
  • President Cyril Ramaphosa public commitment (April 2023) to bring Section 6 into force with effect from 1 April 2024. This commitment was formally realised on 28 April 2024, when President Cyril Ramaphosa published a notice in the Government Gazette bringing Section 6 into operation.
  • Vigil held outside Parliament advocating for proper energy planning (June 2023), collaborated with SAFCEI, Oceans Not Oil, and Project 90 by 2030, calling for a legally compliant IEP and sound environmental energy policy.
  • South Africa’s Renewable Energy Master Plan (SAREM) submission (July 2023) emphasising the need for ecological limits and community beneficiation. Our involvement in the development of SAREM reflects this commitment.
  • PowerUp Cape Town Statement of Demands (November 2023) outlined community priorities for an equitable energy transition and greater public accountability.
2024
  • Submission to the PCC (February 2024), provided a formal briefing addressing the intersection of energy policy, climate justice, and ocean protection.
  • Draft Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2023 submission (March 2024)
  • The Green Connection, SAFCEI and WWF began hosting information sharing sessions with communities to raise awareness about the IEP (March – September 2024). These sessions aimed to shape a people’s IEP, grounded in principles of energy equity, climate justice, and sustainability.
2025
  • Joint submission on draft Oil & Gas Regulations (May 2025), co-signed with Natural Justice, Centre for Environmental Rights and groundWork, calling for strong oversight on accountability in upstream petroleum policy.
  • Letter to Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa about IRP (June 2025).
  • Research Paper (Briefing Note) – Transitioning The Liquid Fuels Sector (June 2025) – Transport Report.
  • Civil Society Organizations Letter to Presidency of the G20 about Africa’s Adaptation-Related Priorities (June 2025)
